Review: Sawyer Mini Water Filtration System

The Sawyer Mini Water Filtration System is probably the lightest and most useful water filtration systems on the market today. It’s made to allow direct drinking from any stream. This water filtration system should be in everyone’s bug out bag or survival cache!

Full Description and Uses of the Sawyer Mini Water Filtration System

The Sawyer Mini Water Filtration System is a high performance filter that can fit in the palm of your hand and it only weighs 2 ounces. It also features a hollow-fiber membrane that provides a pretty high flow rate. This means that if you sip on it like a straw, it filters the water while being sent up to your mouth. This product also includes the Sawyer 16 fl. oz. reusable pouch where you can also attach the filter. The pouch will allow you to fill it with water from lakes or streams, enabling you to squeeze the water through the filter.

It has 0.1-micron filter that can physically remove 99.99% of all bacteria including cholera, E. coli, and salmonella. It can also remove 99.99% protozoa like cryptosporidium and giardia. That’s awesome, right? And even though it is small and lightweight, it is able to filter up to 100,000 gallons of water, which is 30 times more compared to other water filters.

The Sawyer Mini Water Filtration System also comes with a cleaning syringe that you can use to backflush the filter in order to maintain a high-flow rate. Another cool thing about it is that it fits the threads on most water bottles that you can buy from grocery stores. Also, it can be used as an inline filter, too, however, adapters and hoses are not included.

It very easy to use and to clean as well. You just have to avoid freezing it because that may ruin the hollow-fiber membrane. With this product, you will be able to get a Sawyer mini water filter, a 16 fl. 0z. reusable squeeze pouch, a filter tip cap, and a cleaning syringe. Its size, convenience, and performance makes it perfect for everything like for camping or for travelling to different places where water cannot be trusted.

Conclusion

As an avid camper and backpacker, I have to say that I was interested on how this product filters water compared to other larger ones like Kaitlyn brand filters. When you need to filter many liters of water per day it can be really time consuming. However, this filter’s squeeze bottle seems to be faster than other filters I’ve used while backpacking or camping.

I’d also like to add that you may run into situations with the pouches, when repeated squeezing is performed, it may split toward the mouth of the pouches that this filter comes with. From reading other reviews it seems that Sawyer recommends keeping the filter adequately back-flushed and to be cautious with how much pressure is applied to the pouches to avoid splitting. Storing this filter in a cooler, dryer place also seems to increase the lifespan of the product.

Given all the above factors of the Sawyer mini water filtration system, I feel it’s a great addition to any survivalist, backpacker, or hiker. Extremely lightweight, cost efficient, and a really great filter for long-term needs.
